South Texas Health System Named a Best Regional Hospital in Texas by U.S. News & World Report
Rio Grande Valley residents do not have to travel to Corpus Christi, San Antonio or Houston to find excellent healthcare, according to U.S. News & World Report. The magazine has named South Texas Health System (STHS) as a Best Regional Hospital in Texas for 2022-23.
STHS, which ranked No. 25 on the list of Best Regional Hospitals in Texas, is the only hospital or healthcare system in the Rio Grande Valley to make the list, which is designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions and common elective procedures.
“Providing quality, compassionate care to all patients across South Texas Health System’s 11 facilities has always been our top priority. It inspires the work we do as we strive to be among the nation’s leaders in healthcare,” says Chuck Stark, Regional Vice President, South Texas Health System. “I am proud of the care and compassion our medical, clinical and support staff delivers to the community, and this recognition is a result of their commitment to upholding the highest standards of quality and safety for our patients and the communities we serve.”

As the only ranked hospital in the Rio Grande Valley, STHS was also recognized as “high performing” for kidney failure, heart attack, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes, stroke and pneumonia.
To be considered among this year's Best Regional Hospitals, a hospital or healthcare system commonly had to outperform in at least seven of the procedures and conditions U.S. News & World Report evaluates, including risk-adjusted survival, patient experience, level of nursing care and how successfully each hospital gets patients back home. The magazine evaluated each of the hospital’s performance using a variety of measures from data provided by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, American Hospital Association, professional organizations and medical specialists.
During the evaluation process, U.S. News & World Report collected and assessed data from South Texas Health System’s acute-care facilities: STHS McAllen, STHS Edinburg, STHS Heart and STHS Children’s, as well as its behavioral hospital, STHS Behavioral.
