Understanding the Effects of Alzheimer's Disease

The number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s Disease is only growing larger.

About one in nine people 65 and older is living with Alzheimer’s Disease for an estimated total of 6.7 million Americans in 2023, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. By 2050, this number is projected to increase to nearly 13 million.

While the devastating effect of Alzheimer’s on the mind is well-known, what may be overlooked is how deadly the disease is. One in three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, causing more deaths than breast cancer or prostate cancer combined. Additionally, Alzheimer’s put a strain on the people who care for them who are typically family members, friends or other unpaid caregivers.

As part of its commitment to normalizing discussions on mental health and removing the stigma surrounding mental illnesses, South Texas Health System Behavioral will focus on the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease in its next “Let’s Talk Mental Health” webinar. The special online seminar will focus on the impact

Alzheimer’s can have on the people who acquire the disease and on their loved ones.
