Keeping an Eye on Your Cholesterol
High cholesterol is dangerous and sneaky. Nearly two in five adults in the United States have high cholesterol, which is a total cholesterol above 200mg/dL, but the condition has no signs or symptoms, and it puts people at risk for heart disease and stroke, two leading causes of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Because there are no symptoms, getting cholesterol levels checked regularly is important to maintaining it at healthy levels. Conditions that could raise the risk of high cholesterol include obesity and type 2 diabetes. Other risk factors include diet, lack of exercise and genetics.
To encourage and help the community be aware of the dangers of high cholesterol, South Texas Health System is dedicating the next installment of its “Let’s Talk Your Health” series to the condition as part of its commitment to help the Rio Grande Valley community manage their health. This free online seminar will help people learn more about the risks of having high blood pressure and what they can do to manage it.
