Understanding Those Contemplating Suicide

Mental Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, responsible for more than 48,000 deaths in 2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But what causes people to take their own lives?

There is no single answer to this question as several factors and life events can contribute to suicide risk. However, about 90% of people who die by suicide have a mental health disorder such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, schizophrenia or substance abuse disorder, according to Suicide Awareness Voices of Education.

Knowing how to help someone experiencing suicidal thoughts can be a challenge, but as part of its commitment to normalizing discussions on mental health and removing the stigma surrounding mental illnesses, South Texas Health System Behavioral will discuss suicide awareness in its next “Let’s Talk Mental Health” webinar. This free online seminar will highlight what to know about people who are considering taking their own life and what can be done to help them.
