Welcome to the South Texas Health System GME Consortium’s Internal Medicine Residency Program. We are a new ACGME-accredited community-based program in Hidalgo County, located in the beautiful Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. Our program is designed to cultivate the next generation of physicians through a comprehensive and dynamic educational experience within South Texas Health System, the largest integrated network of care in the four-county region.

We will welcome our inaugural class on July 1, 2024, and invite you to consider paving the way for our program, which will offer a patient care experience dedicated to improving the health of the medically underserved population in the Rio Grande Valley. Our program accepts 20 residents per year for our total complement of 60 residents.

Residents rotate at South Texas Health System McAllen, South Texas Health System EdinburgSouth Texas Health System Heart and South Texas Health System Behavioral — all of which are nationally recognized facilities equipped with advanced medical technology and a strong commitment to patient care. The ASAS Health Clinic in Edinburg will serve as the continuity clinic for our internal medicine residents, ensuring a consistent and enriching patient care experience.

Our mission is to train physicians holistically, focusing on a humanistic approach to medicine. We are committed to creating an inclusive and safe clinical learning environment that prioritizes the education and well-being of our healthcare team.

Residents will benefit from various subspecialty rotations, providing broad exposure to internal medicine. Additionally, there will be ample opportunities to learn and perform various medical procedures. We have crafted a curriculum incorporating point-of-care ultrasound and guaranteeing dedicated and protected time for didactics daily, fostering an environment of continuous learning and professional development. Moreover, our program offers numerous research opportunities, allowing residents to engage in scholarly activities and contribute to advancing medical knowledge.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Working with diverse colleagues, health professionals and leaders to provide coordinated team-based care to patients of all ages.
  • A diverse group of residents, including the underrepresented in medicine, who are passionate about primary care and improving the health of the medically underserved.
  • A humanistic, inclusive and safe clinical learning environment committed to education and well-being of the healthcare team.
  • Faculty who role model excellence, compassion, professionalism, teamwork, evidence-based medicine, scholarship and joy in the practice of medicine.
  • Integrated behavioral healthcare at the primary continuity clinic to improve patient outcomes.
  • The diversity and health disparities seen in the region provide residents with a wide volume and variety of clinical and educational experiences.
  • A comprehensive curriculum that prepares residents to pass their board certification exam and be ready for independent clinical practice of internal medicine.

We are excited and eager to train internal medicine residents to advocate for equitable, high-quality, affordable, and high-value care and improve the health outcomes of their patients and the communities we serve.

Thank you for your interest in our program.
